Understanding Governance Performance and Future Challenges – Advance HE has published the first of a new series of insight and research reports on the effectiveness of governance in higher education.

Understanding Governance Performance and Future Challenges draws on recent surveys of 20 institutions carried out as part of governance effectiveness reviews by Advance HE which paint a picture about how well the sector judges that it is governing itself.

Insights from the report reveal that governing bodies must:

  • improve their approach to performance reviews of members, including Chairs
  • better support student members
  • improve their approach to overseeing the performance of their universities and better engage with the development of the long-term institutional strategy to be more proactive and less reactive
  • improve diversity.

The report will be complemented by our webinar Culture – the key to good governance, on 30 April, which will look at the quality of governance and explore what can be done to improve culture further.

COVID-19 response webinars – We are striving to ensure we are supporting our members as much as possible during the current pandemic. Our COVID-19 response series of webinars launched on 1 April with over 5,000 people booking onto the webinars over the last month. Join the conversation in Advance HE Connect – We are conscious that many people will be working with online learning and assessment and we want to offer as much support as possible. The Learning and Teaching Network, on Advance HE Connect, our online network dedicated to HE, is our hub for this and we will be posting resources and be available to answer questions or host discussions.

In the resource area we have started a file with online resources which might be useful to you and others. If you would like to post anything please do so on the live feed and use the tags to help the content to be searchable. If you are not yet a member of Advance HE Connect, it is open to all with 16,500 sector colleagues already coming together to share, connect and collaborate.

Research Development (RD) is part of the Department of Enterprise, Employability and Research Development. RD is responsible for ensuring that Research and Enterprise is of the highest quality and meets all required internal and external standards, including managing the institutional submission to the Research Excellence Framework (REF). RD leads on development and implementation of the institutional research and enterprise integrity policies, processes and best practice. It also hosts the institutional Staff Researcher Development Programme and the Early Career Researcher Programme SPARC, and is responsible for the annual Research Internship programme. RD provides strategic and targeted support for academic staff to seek and secure funding for their research and innovation activities. This includes identification of core funding opportunities and support for proposal development, alongside strategic advice and support for faculties to develop their research portfolio and capacity.
